The Benefits of waste-based biofuels

Waste-based biofuel offers significantly lower carbon dioxide & greenhouse gas emissions

Used cooking oil and waste fats, otherwise polluting the environment, sent to landfill or poured down drains (causing blockages known as fatbergs) are converted into sustainable biodiesel for use in European transport. This waste-based biofuel offers significantly lower carbon dioxide & greenhouse gas emissions than those from fossil fuels, reducing environmental pollution, saving space in landfill and reducing the costs of maintaining drainage/water treatment networks.

Our biofuel offers greenhouse gas savings of over 90% compared with fossil fuel. As a result of its use in road fuels, it currently saves around 1 million tonnes of CO2 from our atmosphere each year; equivalent to removing 550 thousand cars from Europe’s roads.

There are currently 20,000 people directly and indirectly employed in the production and distribution of waste based biofuels within Europe (including the collection of used cooking oil as a feedstock), a figure which is estimated to be growing at a rate of 5% per annum.

Unlike biofuels made from crops (first generation biofuels), the components of waste-based biodiesel do not directly occupy farm land, as such; it does not put upward pressure on food prices, contribute to food scarcity or lead to increases in the use of chemical fertilisers. Used cooking oil, animal fats and other similar feedstocks are wastes; waste-based biodiesel production is a sustainable method of removing a waste and creating a valuable renewable low emission resource.

Non-food based biofuels produced from wastes and residues are grouped with advanced biofuels by the European commission; waste-based biodiesel has been identified as being particularly beneficial in helping the EU to meet its ambitious decarbonisation targets.

All of our members and suppliers are fully International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) or equivalent body compliant, meeting their sustainability requirements for the production of biomass and are audited to prove full traceable, sustainability and climate-friendly credentials of the used cooking/ tallow they source.
